….Demands Justice Over Alleged Sexual Harassment by Senate President Akpabio

The Association of Female Comrades (AFC) has strongly condemned Senator Neda Imasuen’s recommendation of a six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and demanded justice regarding her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and her subsequent suspension by the Senate.

In a statement signed by the association, Comr Muniretu Isah, the female body expressed dismay over the action of the Senate.

The controversial suspension came after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had formally accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and submitted a petition to the Senate.

However, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Imasuen, dismissed the petition on procedural grounds.

The committee argued that Akpoti-Uduaghan had personally signed the petition, contrary to Senate rules, and that the matter was already before a court, making it subjudice.

In response, Akpabio has denied the allegations, stating, “At no time did I ever attempt any sexual harassment.” He emphasized his respect for women, citing his upbringing by a single mother and his role as a father to four daughters.

The AFC said it views the dismissal of the petition as “a blatant disregard for the seriousness of the allegations and an attempt to silence a female legislator.

“The association insists that technicalities must not overshadow justice and calls for a thorough, impartial investigation into the claims.

“AFC stands in solidarity with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and urges the Senate to prioritize accountability, fairness, and the protection of women in leadership.

“The association warns against the suppression of women’s voices and demands that the legislative body uphold the principles of justice and integrity in addressing matters of sexual misconduct”, the statement concluded.
