Prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, has voiced strong criticism against the decision of some Northern State governments to keep schools closed until April 6, citing Ramadan as the reason.
In a tweet that has sparked widespread debate, Omirhobo called for immediate action to uphold the secularity of Nigeria.
“I expect the Attorney General to come out from his shell to call the Northern State Governments closing down schools to order,” Omirhobo stated, emphasizing the need for federal intervention.
He expressed concern over the implications of such closures, describing them as “a bad benchmark and a dangerous precedent being created here.”
The lawyer did not hold back in questioning the silence of influential figures in the region. “Where are the Northern elites?” he asked, urging them to address the issue and ensure adherence to the principles of a secular state.
Chief Malcolm Omirhobo further proposed a bold measure to deter such actions in the future. “The secularity of Nigeria must be respected by all. Any State that offends it should get her monthly allocation seized,” he declared, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The tweet has ignited discussions across social media platforms, with many debating the balance between religious observances and the constitutional principle of secularity. While some have supported Omirhobo’s stance, others argue that the closures are a reflection of cultural and religious values.
As the conversation continues, all eyes are on the federal government and the Attorney General to see whether any action will be taken in response to Omirhobo’s call for accountability.
