Her Excellency Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, the wife of the Governor of Kogi State, has delivered a resounding call to action for gender equality during a speech commemorating International Women’s Day 2025. Addressing women from across the state, she emphasized the urgency of this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,” and encouraged bold steps to ensure progress is both intentional and swift.
“This theme is not just a statement; it is a call to move forward with greater speed and determination,” Hajia Sefinat declared. “It reminds us that progress must not be slow—it must be intentional and bold. It will be a thing of joy to see Kogi women leading this noble charge.”
Highlighting the achievements and challenges faced by women, the First Lady pointed out that, despite significant advancements in business, politics, and education, barriers still exist that restrict opportunities and slow progress. “It is time to ensure that every girl can go to school, that every woman can work without discrimination, and that every mother has access to quality healthcare,” she stated, urging parents to leverage initiatives such as the Child Rights Act and the free education and bursary schemes in Kogi State. “Without education, we can’t take effective action,” she stressed.
Hajia Sefinat underscored the collective nature of the fight for gender equality, stating that it is not solely a women’s issue but a shared responsibility. “When we empower women, we empower the nation. When we educate girls, we uplift communities. When we support women in leadership, we build a better society for everyone. This is why we must not wait any longer. We must act now, and we must act together.”
The First Lady also commended ongoing initiatives in Kogi State aimed at promoting education for girls, improving healthcare for women, and supporting female entrepreneurs. However, she called for additional efforts, appealing to leaders, organizations, and individuals to join hands in accelerating progress.
In her uplifting message to the women of Kogi State, Hajia Sefinat said, “You are strong, you are capable, and your dreams are valid. Never let anything hold you back. Stand tall, speak up, and take your rightful place in society. Your voice matters, your work matters, and your future is bright.”
Expressing gratitude to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Hajia Sefinat lauded her leadership in empowering women and driving the movement for gender equality. “With you, we have rediscovered our voices,” she said. “Our women are grateful, and their voices of appreciation are loud.”
In closing, Hajia Sefinat appealed to men to join in the efforts, emphasizing that collaboration strengthens both genders. “Our strength is for your greatness. Join hands with us to ensure gender equality,” she urged.
The speech concluded with a rallying cry for action. “Let us not just talk about gender equality; let us live it, practice it, and demand it. Together, we can build a world where every woman and girl has the chance to reach her full potential,” she said.
International Women’s Day 2025 was marked with optimism and a renewed commitment to advancing gender equality in Kogi State, with Hajia Sefinat’s words resonating as a powerful call to action.
