The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammad Matawalle MON, has voiced his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. This decisive measure, according to Matawalle, is essential to restoring stability in the state’s politically turbulent environment.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Matawalle emphasized the necessity of the declaration to address the ongoing political crisis that has impeded democratic governance and the welfare of Rivers State residents. He urged all political actors to respect the President’s directive and work collaboratively toward a peaceful resolution.
The Minister highlighted the Nigerian Military’s readiness to protect government infrastructure and ensure public safety. He issued a stern warning against any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order, assuring that such actions would be met with a firm response from security forces.
Reflecting on the President’s address, Matawalle underscored the gravity of the political crisis, citing the demolition of the House of Assembly by the state governor, which has left Rivers State without a functioning legislature for over fourteen months. He also referenced the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which condemned the governor’s actions as unconstitutional and called for the immediate restoration of democratic governance.
Expressing concern over reports of vandalism and militant threats, Matawalle stressed the importance of a unified effort to restore peace and security. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and vital infrastructure in Rivers State.
In conclusion, the Minister called on all stakeholders to seize this opportunity for renewed governance and cooperation, expressing hope that the state of emergency would pave the way for a peaceful and democratic Rivers State.
