The North-West Democratic Awareness has issued a powerful statement condemning the political style of Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State. In a scathing press release signed by its Coordinator, Sanusi Lawal Tsiga, the group described El-Rufai’s tenure as “a cautionary tale of how the intoxication of power can lead to the erosion of democratic values and the alienation of those one is meant to serve.”
The group criticized El-Rufai’s public remarks about past leaders, calling them emblematic of a troubling trend in Nigerian politics. “His public celebration of the demise of former leaders, including President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and his derisive comments on the political decline of President Goodluck Jonathan are not just examples of poor decorum; they signify a lack of understanding of the delicate nature of political relationships in Nigeria,” the statement read.
El-Rufai’s criticisms of Nigeria’s founding fathers, including Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Nnamdi Azikiwe, were also highlighted as deeply divisive. “By positioning himself as a challenger to the legacies that have shaped our nation, El-Rufai has not only disrespected history but has also jeopardized the collective memory that binds our society together,” the release stated.
The organization further accused El-Rufai of authoritarian tendencies during his administration, claiming that he sidelined dissenting voices and undermined democratic principles. “The authoritarian tendencies exhibited during El-Rufai’s administration have further exacerbated his political isolation,” the statement noted. “By sidelining dissenting voices and undermining democratic principles, he has demonstrated that power can corrupt even the most ambitious of leaders.”
In a rallying call, the North-West Democratic Awareness urged Nigerians to reject what they described as the “destructive path paved by El-Rufai.” The group emphasized the need for leaders who embody humility, respect for historical legacies, and a commitment to democratic ideals. “True leadership is not defined by bravado or the audacity to challenge the status quo; it is rooted in humility, respect for historical legacies, and a commitment to democratic principles,” the statement declared.
The organization concluded with a vision for the future of Nigerian politics: “The lessons of El-Rufai’s political journey remind us that power is ephemeral. Those who wield it must do so with a profound understanding of the broader political ecosystem and an unwavering commitment to the principles of respect, humility, and inclusivity.”
This statement serves as a clarion call for a new political paradigm in Nigeria—one that prioritizes integrity, respect, and a genuine commitment to the democratic ideals that unite the nation.
