The Bola Tinubu-led government has come under fire for what has been described as increasing authoritarian tendencies, following remarks made by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, a presidential spokesman, against H.E. Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and a leading opposition figure.
During a colloquium held to celebrate the 60th birthday of Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Peter Obi reportedly voiced concerns over what he characterized as the federal government’s growing despotic leanings. His comments were met with sharp criticism from Mr. Onanuga, who labeled Obi a “disgruntled politician” and warned him to “watch his mouth.”
The response from the Tinubu administration has sparked controversy, with accusations of attempts to stifle free speech—a right guaranteed under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. The Obidient Movement, a political group aligned with Obi, issued a statement condemning Onanuga’s remarks as both “uncouth” and indicative of a broader pattern of intolerance within the administration.
Signed by Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications & Media for the Movement, the statement questioned the intent behind the warning, asking, “Watch his mouth… or what?”
The Movement went further to allege that the administration’s focus on silencing dissenting voices has detracted from addressing critical national issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and governance failures.
The group cautioned Nigerians and the international community to hold the administration accountable should any harm befall Obi, his family, or his associates.
Citing incidents during the 2023 elections, the Movement argued that inciteful rhetoric from officials, including Onanuga, had contributed to violence, ethnic tension, and division that continue to affect the nation.
As the Tinubu administration faces mounting pressure to address the nation’s challenges, critics contend that a renewed commitment to inclusive governance and freedom of expression is essential to restoring public trust and unity in Nigeria.
