In a landmark decision, Judge Patricia Millett upheld the block on deportation flights initiated under former President Donald Trump’s administration. The ruling, which has significant implications for U.S. immigration policy, has also brought Millett’s political affiliations into the spotlight.

Judge Patricia Millett had maintained an injunction against President Donald Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act, preventing the president from using the law to expedite the deportation of alleged criminal Venezuelan illegal aliens connected to Tren de Aragua, a foreign terror organization. The Trump administration is now asking the Supreme Court to decide on the case.

Meanwhile, Millett, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, has a well-documented history of political involvement. She has donated to Democratic campaigns and was an active volunteer for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. These connections have led some critics to question whether her political leanings influenced her decision in this case.

The case centers on the Trump administration’s policy of deporting individuals who had entered the United States illegally. Supporters of the policy argue that it was a necessary measure to uphold the rule of law and protect national security. Opponents, however, contend that the policy was inhumane and violated international human rights standards.

Millett’s ruling has reignited a broader debate about the role of politics in the judiciary. Critics argue that judges with strong political affiliations may struggle to remain impartial, while supporters of Millett’s decision emphasize the importance of judicial independence and the need to protect vulnerable populations.

According to reports, Federal Election Commission filings reveal that Judge Patricia Millett was an active donor to Democratic campaigns from 2008 to 2012.

She contributed more than $31,000 to various Democratic candidates and organizations, including Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, Hillary Clinton’s 2008 bid, Tim Kaine, the Democratic National Committee, and local Democratic groups in Virginia.

Millett also volunteered for Obama’s 2008 campaign, providing legal assistance to voter protection teams in states like Ohio and New Hampshire.

Her appointment to the judiciary was endorsed by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, an advocacy group that supports policies such as amnesty for undocumented immigrants and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Millett’s ruling to uphold the injunction against deportation flights aligns with the order issued by U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg, another appointee of Barack Obama.

Judge Boasberg has a record of issuing rulings that have been viewed as obstacles to the Trump administration’s policies on immigration and other issues. In 2018, he restricted the administration’s ability to detain migrant families, which critics claim undermined efforts to deter illegal immigration.

Boasberg also presided over cases linked to the “Russiagate” investigation, granting leniency to a high-profile defendant.

His wife, Elizabeth Manson, is also noted for her political activity, having donated over $11,000 to Democratic candidates and organizations, including Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Additionally, she established an abortion clinic in the Washington, D.C. area.

As the conversation around this case continues, it serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between law, politics, and human rights. Whether Millett’s decision will stand the test of time remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the discourse surrounding immigration in the United States.
