In an escalating political saga, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of colluding with former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to orchestrate her assassination. These allegations, made during her recent address to supporters in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area, have ignited intense political debate.
The embattled Senator alleges that Akpabio, alongside influential figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been attempting to recall her from the Senate. According to Natasha, Akpabio pressured Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo to initiate the recall, only for Ododo to reportedly resist, citing her popularity among the people.
“Akpabio spoke to Governor Ododo to recall me. But he told him it would be impossible because the masses are with her,” Natasha claimed. She further alleged that Akpabio turned to Yahaya Bello, with Cross River Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong reportedly accompanying Bello to a meeting where funds exchanged hands to advance the recall process.
Taking the allegations further, Natasha accused the Senate President of explicitly instructing Bello to orchestrate her assassination in Kogi, making it appear as a local attack. “Akpabio told Yahaya Bello… that killing me should not happen in Abuja but here, so it will seem as if it’s the people that killed me,” Natasha asserted.
Adding to the tension, retired investigative journalist Dr. Kemi Olunloyo disclosed on her social media platforms that individuals allegedly associated with Akpabio offered her N10 million to write defamatory articles against Natasha and launder Akpabio’s image. Dr. Olunloyo rejected the offer, stating that she does not accept money from politicians and expressed her solidarity with Natasha in navigating Nigeria’s challenging political landscape.
Despite the political storm, Natasha remains defiant. On Tuesday, she received a heroic welcome in Ihima as supporters gathered to celebrate her homecoming, defying a ban on rallies by the Kogi State Government. “Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I am an Ebira woman; this is my land,” she declared amidst cheers from her constituents.
The ban on rallies, imposed by the Okehi Local Government Area chairman and accompanied by a police warning, claimed to address security concerns. However, Natasha dismissed the restrictions as a targeted attempt to silence her.
Her suspension from the Senate, reportedly linked to alleged rule violations and allegations against Akpabio, has only added to the political drama. Natasha insists her challenges stem from a calculated witch hunt, emphasizing that any security breaches at her events should be attributed to Akpabio, Bello, and Governor Ododo.
As the allegations continue to unfold, the public and political observers are closely watching to see how these developments will impact the Senate and Kogi State’s political dynamics.
