The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially withdrawn its invitation to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II regarding the unfortunate events during the Sallah celebration in Kano State on March 30, 2025. Initially, the invitation aimed to gather Alhaji Sanusi’s account of the incident, which led to a breakdown of law and order.

Following consultations with stakeholders and to prevent any misinterpretation of police actions, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun directed the withdrawal of the invitation. Instead, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been tasked with obtaining Alhaji Sanusi’s statement directly in Kano.

The incident stemmed from a confrontation during the Sallah celebration. Despite an agreement between the two disputed Emirs of Kano—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—to forgo the traditional Durbar Festival to maintain peace, Alhaji Aminu Sanusi mounted a horse in a procession after Eid prayers. This act led to clashes involving local youths, resulting in the tragic death of Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others.

The NPF remains committed to conducting its investigations with professionalism and neutrality. Arrests have already been made, and all individuals found culpable will face justice. The Force emphasizes its dedication to upholding peace and public safety in Kano State.
