A black Toyota Hilux vehicle belonging to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Nuhu Ribadu, was stolen during Juma’at prayers in Abuja on Friday, prompting swift police action and heightened security measures across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The theft reportedly occurred around 1:05 p.m. when an official from ONSA parked the vehicle opposite the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) complex in Area 10, near a mosque frequented by worshippers for Friday prayers. The official had left the vehicle to attend the prayers and returned to discover that it had been stolen.
The incident was brought to public attention by security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the theft on his X account (formerly Twitter). According to him, the official immediately reported the case to the Garki Police Division at approximately 2:00 p.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement authorities.
In response to the theft, the FCT Police Command launched a citywide stop-and-search operation aimed at tracking the culprits and recovering the stolen vehicle. Officers were deployed to strategic locations, including major checkpoints and entry and exit points across the capital city. The police also confirmed that a coordinated investigation is underway and assured the public that all necessary efforts are being made to resolve the matter.
“The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen Hilux,” a police spokesperson stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident.
Vehicle thefts remain a persistent challenge in Abuja, highlighting the vulnerabilities faced even by high-profile institutions such as the Office of the National Security Adviser. This incident has further underscored the need for enhanced security measures during public gatherings and high-traffic periods like Friday prayers.
As investigations continue, residents are being urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The police have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining law and order in the capital.
This high-profile theft has sparked discussions about the adequacy of security protocols in government establishments and public spaces, as well as the challenges faced by law enforcement in safeguarding lives and property in Nigeria’s bustling capital city.
