Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the people of Plateau State following the recent tragic killings in the Bokkos area.
The senseless violence has left several communities devastated, with families mourning their loved ones and many displaced from their homes.
In a show of compassion and leadership, Obi traveled from Abuja to Jos to personally condole with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the residents of the state. From the state capital, he made his way to Bokkos, where he met with victims, displaced children, and members of the affected communities.
“What has happened in these communities is very saddening and utterly unacceptable,” Obi stated during his visit. “Nigerians should not be killed or forced to flee their homes when we are not at war. Every life is precious, and no Nigerian, regardless of where they live, should have to live in fear or uncertainty.”
Obi expressed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and communities, acknowledging the pain and devastation brought by the violence. “No words can truly capture the pain and devastation that such senseless violence brings. My heart is with the people of Bokkos, the displaced children, women, and entire communities during this difficult time,” he said.
Recognizing the importance of tangible support, Obi highlighted the ongoing efforts by the Obidient Movement to assist the victims. Earlier initiatives included the construction of a borehole to provide clean water for an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp and the surrounding community. On his recent visit, Obi further extended support with a donation of ₦7.5 million to improve facilities for displaced children, ensure continuous education, and address the ongoing needs of those affected.
“Now, more than ever, leadership and compassion are essential,” Obi added, emphasizing his commitment to peace, justice, and healing. “I stand in solidarity with Plateau State and remain committed to supporting all efforts toward peace, justice, and healing.”
He concluded his visit by offering prayers for the departed souls and hope for the resilience and unity of the affected communities. “May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may the people find strength, comfort, and unity as they rebuild their lives,” he said, reinforcing his vision for a better Nigeria, encapsulated in his mantra: “A new Nigeria is possible!”
This gesture by Peter Obi has been widely praised as an example of empathy and active leadership during times of crisis.
