On the 42nd anniversary of the passing of one of Nigeria’s foremost advocates for the common people, Mallam Aminu Kano, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has issued a powerful tribute, urging Nigerians, particularly political leaders, to re-embrace the ideals he championed.
In a press statement signed by the National Chairman of the PRP, Falalu Bello, O.F.R., the party honored Mallam Aminu Kano as a “remarkable leader, visionary, and advocate for the marginalized,” whose enduring legacy remains a guiding light for the nation’s ongoing struggle for democracy, equity, and justice.
Born on August 9, 1920, Aminu Kano emerged as a beacon of hope, particularly for the downtrodden “talakawa” of Northern Nigeria. His revolutionary socialist agenda promoted societal equality and ignited a movement that transcended ethnic and class divisions.
According to the PRP, his life’s work laid a solid foundation for political reform and the upliftment of the oppressed, with a relentless emphasis on building a society where political institutions genuinely reflect the aspirations and needs of the people.
As one of the founding leaders of the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and later the PRP, Aminu Kano stood in defiance against the autocratic Native Administrations and colonial authorities, who he believed perpetuated class struggles and widened societal divides. His vision, as the PRP recalled, was succinctly captured in the historic Sawaba Declaration, which he co-authored:
“At present, the machinery of government, including the armed forces of the nation, exist only to conserve the privilege of a selfish minority group. The talakawa must organize consciously and politically for the conquest of the powers of government both nationally and locally in order that this machinery of government, including these forces, may be converted from an instrument of oppression into an agent of emancipation and the overthrow of bureaucracy and autocratic privilege.”
In their statement, the PRP emphasized that this message remains as relevant today as it was decades ago. They called on contemporary and aspiring politicians to prioritize the welfare of the people over personal ambition and to work towards governance that genuinely serves all citizens, irrespective of background.
The PRP also celebrated Aminu Kano’s unwavering advocacy for women’s rights, his relentless efforts on behalf of the poor, and his firm opposition to ethnically-based political parties. At a time when social justice and equality are pressing concerns, the party implored Nigerian leaders and young political aspirants to embody Aminu Kano’s spirit of inclusiveness, dialogue, and mass mobilization towards collective progress.
Highlighting his unique model of political engagement—rooted in empowerment and education—the PRP described Aminu Kano as a true leader whose measure was found in his ability to elevate the voices of the disenfranchised. The party urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to these ideals, ensuring that democratic institutions serve the common good and remain accessible and responsive to all citizens.
In a pointed critique of the present political environment, the PRP decried the rigged local government elections in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and other states where Aminu Kano’s followers traditionally held sway. The party insisted that these electoral injustices must be reversed if democracy is to survive in Nigeria.
“As we mark this 42nd anniversary of Mallam Aminu Kano’s passing, let us celebrate his life not merely through remembrance but through action,” the statement read. “Let us renew our dedication to his principles, ensuring that his vision for a just and egalitarian society remains alive in the hearts and minds of current and future leaders.”
In closing, Falalu Bello called on all citizens, especially those in leadership positions, to honor Mallam Aminu Kano’s legacy by striving for a Nigeria where equity, justice, and democracy thrive, where power resides with the people, and where every voice, especially that of the talakawa, is heard and valued.
“May the spirit of Mallam Aminu Kano guide us as we forge ahead in our collective quest for a better Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
