In a rousing address to mark World Earth Day, Rtr. Ekemba Chibuzor FISAM, President of the Rotaract Club of Nsukka, called for urgent, collective action against plastic pollution, echoing this year’s global theme, “Planet vs. Plastics.”
Speaking to an audience of Rotaractors, environmental advocates, and community members, Chibuzor emphasized the critical need for immediate steps to combat the escalating environmental crisis. He noted that plastic waste is not just a distant global issue but a pressing local concern, impacting Nsukka’s streets, markets, and waterways.
“Our everyday actions leave an imprint on the environment,” Chibuzor said. “We must become agents of change—not tomorrow, but today.”
The Rotaract Club president urged the community to embrace sustainable habits and instill a culture of environmental stewardship, stressing that true service lies in protecting the very planet that sustains life. He challenged the people of Nsukka to reduce dependency on single-use plastics, champion recycling efforts, educate others on environmental protection, and advocate for stronger conservation policies.
Highlighting Rotaract’s spirit of “service above self,” Chibuzor envisioned a future where Nsukka stands as a beacon of environmental innovation and resilience. He called on citizens to plant trees, organize clean-up campaigns, and inspire dialogues around sustainable living.
“Together, we can heal the Earth, not just through speeches but through decisive actions,” he concluded. “Let us make every day Earth Day, starting now.”
The speech drew enthusiastic applause and a renewed sense of purpose among attendees, setting a hopeful tone for Nsukka’s environmental future.
