In a decisive effort to combat child hunger, boost school attendance, and stimulate local economies, the Federal Government has engaged key stakeholders in the relaunch of the Renewed-Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP).

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, revealed that approximately 900 billion to 1 trillion Naira would be needed annually to successfully deliver nutritious meals to pupils in Primary 1 to 3. The programme targets serving three meals per week to millions of children across the country. Dr. Sununu underscored the importance of partnership, stating that federal appropriations alone would not be sufficient. He stressed the need for additional funding sources to ensure the programme’s sustainability and effectiveness.

Supporting the Minister’s call, Associate Professor Badamasi Lawal, PhD, National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), outlined potential funding avenues. These include presidential backing, international donor contributions, key stakeholder investments, and 5% allocations from recovered repatriation funds.

“As stakeholders, your technical expertise, strategic insights, and financial support are invaluable,” Dr. Lawal said. “Through this engagement, we aim to build collaborative pathways that strengthen and sustain the programme in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly eradicating hunger, ensuring quality education, and alleviating poverty.”

He further described the RH-NHGSFP as a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to deliver people-centered, inclusive solutions to Nigeria’s developmental challenges.

Highlighting improvements to the programme, Dr. Lawal noted that the enhanced model would deliver greater transparency, inclusiveness, and measurable outcomes, offering a blueprint for sustainable school feeding systems globally.
