The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja with dramatic revelations and tight security measures.

Justice James Omotosho presided over the high-profile case, approving the Federal Government’s request for prosecution witnesses to testify behind screens—citing national security concerns. The court also limited the defence team, led by Kanu Agabi, to 13 counsel members, despite 22 being present.

A key prosecution witness, codenamed AAA and identified as a veteran Department of State Services (DSS) officer with 18 years of experience, gave gripping testimony from behind a screen. He detailed Kanu’s arrest on October 14, 2015, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, near Lagos International Airport.

According to AAA, the hotel denied Kanu was a guest, prompting DSS agents to conduct a room-by-room search. They eventually found Kanu in room 303 with a woman identified as Maria Ibezimakor. AAA testified that Kanu resisted arrest and headbutted a DSS officer, Bolaji.

The room, described as resembling a broadcasting studio, was packed with transmission equipment which Kanu later confirmed as his own.

Evidence including a list of seized items and a CD recording of Kanu’s interrogation was admitted in court. The recording, played publicly, featured Kanu identifying himself and explaining the purpose of Radio Biafra—a station he admitted to founding.

Kanu, a self-described communication engineer, told interrogators that the station operates internationally from countries like the US, Russia, and Sweden, but has no formal presence in Nigeria.

He admitted lacking a broadcast license, citing anticipated government denial as the reason for not applying.

The IPOB leader stated he was motivated by the desire to “make life better” for Nigerians, particularly in the South East, South South, and parts of Benue and Kogi.

Emphasising that he is a freedom fighter and not a criminal, Kanu asserted his right to self-determination under the United Nations Charter.

Four Senior Advocates—Audu Nunghe, Joseph Akubo, Emeka Etiaba, and Onyechi Ikpeazu—joined the defence team as the case intensifies.

The trial continues under tight scrutiny and rising public interest as both sides prepare for more critical revelations.
