Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to bolstering the efforts of the United Nations’ humanitarian operations, underscoring the Federal Government’s resolve to enhance support for humanitarian services across the country.
This pledge was made during a high-level meeting between the Minister and Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, held at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Ship House, Abuja.
Describing the engagement as “long overdue,” Minister Badaru highlighted the importance of renewing and strengthening Nigeria’s collaboration with the United Nations, particularly in critical sectors such as health, water and sanitation, education, and livelihood support.
He stressed that sustained cooperation and improved coordination are vital for achieving long-term development outcomes and addressing humanitarian challenges nationwide.
“We must build on the successes of our past collaborations,” the Minister stated, referencing his tenure as a state governor. He noted how strategic inter-state competition and benchmarking had driven measurable progress in health care delivery, water accessibility, and livelihood enhancement, resulting in notable improvements in national development indices.
Minister Badaru further called for the revitalization of existing partnerships and the development of innovative approaches to humanitarian service delivery. He proposed increased collaboration between technical teams and emphasized the importance of integrating national security institutions into humanitarian planning to ensure seamless and secure implementation.
Responding to the Minister’s remarks, UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Malick Fall commended Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian goals. He praised Minister Badaru’s leadership and reiterated the UN’s willingness to work closely with both federal and state-level actors to improve the impact of development and relief interventions.
