Abuja, Nigeria – April 30, 2025 — In a powerful statement marking this year’s May Day celebrations, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has declared unwavering solidarity with Nigeria’s workers, hailing them as the “bedrock” of the nation’s development and calling on governments to prioritize labour rights, fair wages, and social justice.

The party, through a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, praised the resilience, dedication, and daily sacrifices of Nigerian workers, whose contributions it described as vital to national progress and economic vitality.

“On this momentous occasion of May Day, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) stands in solidarity with Nigeria’s hardworking and resilient labour force,” the statement read. “We take this opportunity to honour and appreciate the invaluable contributions of our workers.”

Tracing the historical significance of May Day in Nigeria, the PRP reminded the nation of its pioneering role in institutionalizing the holiday. The party noted that May Day was first declared a holiday in 1980 by PRP-led governments in Kano and Kaduna States, paving the way for its national recognition in 1981.

“This was a significant recognition of the sacrifices made by the working class,” the PRP emphasized, reaffirming its pride in having championed this important milestone in Nigerian labour history.

While celebrating workers’ achievements, the PRP also drew attention to the ongoing struggles facing the labour force, including poor wages, job insecurity, and harsh working conditions. It urged both federal and state governments to implement policies that promote decent work, protect labour rights, and ensure fair compensation.

“Today, we must not only commemorate the achievements of workers but also reflect on the significant hurdles that remain,” the party stated. “We call upon the federal and state governments to ensure that workers’ rights are upheld.”

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of Nigeria’s working people and the urban and rural poor, the PRP pledged to continue its advocacy for a just and equitable society.
