…..As Coalition of Registered Political Parties in Enugu Lauds 300-Bed Hospital, 260 Health Centres, Digitization of Services

Enugu, Nigeria – May 1, 2025 — The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP), Enugu State Chapter, has praised the administration of Governor Dr. Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for its bold, people-oriented reforms in the healthcare sector. In its ongoing sector-by-sector assessment of governance in the state, the CRPP described Mbah’s performance in healthcare as “visionary, strategic, and transformative,” highlighting key infrastructural and systemic upgrades since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

In a press release jointly signed by Chief Innocent Ezeoha (State Coordinator), Dr. Afam Ani (Chairman), and Barr. Ken Ikeh (Secretary), the coalition commended what it called the “remarkable progress” that the administration has made in strengthening access to quality healthcare, particularly for rural and underserved communities.

“Governor Mbah’s administration has embarked on a historic expansion of healthcare infrastructure with the construction of 260 fully-equipped Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across all electoral wards,” the statement noted. “These facilities are designed to operate 24 hours daily, thereby extending essential healthcare services to the grassroots and tackling critical health challenges such as maternal and infant mortality with proactive and life-saving interventions.”

The CRPP emphasized that this investment in grassroots healthcare is part of a larger vision aimed at creating a resilient healthcare delivery system that reaches all corners of the state. “It is no longer acceptable for rural communities to travel miles for basic care. This administration is correcting that in real time,” the coalition declared.

The statement also revealed that the Mbah administration is executing a plan to ensure that each local government area in the state has a functional, world-class secondary healthcare facility. It highlighted some of the key hospitals being developed or upgraded across the LGAs, including Nsukka General Hospital, Awgu General Hospital, Oji River General Hospital, Agbani General Hospital, and Emene District Hospital.

“We see a commitment to strengthening the healthcare delivery chain and ensuring proximity of quality care to residents across the state,” the CRPP affirmed.

Among the most notable initiatives hailed by the coalition is the construction of a new 300-bed International Hospital at Rangers Avenue in Enugu, situated just beyond the International Conference Center. Describing the project as “a flagship facility,” the coalition said, “This state-of-the-art facility, when completed, is expected to provide cutting-edge medical services, attract medical tourism, and serve as a model of excellence in healthcare delivery across the country and beyond.”

In the same vein, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital is undergoing major renovations. The CRPP noted that the facility is “experiencing significant upgrades under Governor Mbah’s leadership,” including “the construction of a digital laboratory and various critical enhancements aimed at modernizing its operations.”

“These improvements are part of the administration’s broader efforts to align healthcare services in the state with global best practices, ensuring that both teaching and service delivery meet contemporary standards,” the release added.

The Mbah administration has also taken bold steps to strengthen human capital in the health sector. According to the CRPP, “The government has upgraded several schools of nursing and midwifery to full-fledged Colleges of Nursing Sciences. This visionary move will help boost the pipeline of highly skilled healthcare professionals vital for sustaining and maximizing the benefits of the state’s expanding healthcare infrastructure.”

Technology, the coalition observed, is also central to Governor Mbah’s healthcare strategy. “Recognizing the indispensable role of technology in modern healthcare, the Mbah administration has launched the digitization of patient management systems through the introduction of an Electronic Health Management System (e-HMS),” the group said. It added that the reform would “streamline healthcare delivery, improve patient record accuracy, facilitate faster diagnosis and treatments, and enhance public health planning through better data-driven decision-making.”

While acknowledging these achievements, the CRPP also offered constructive feedback. “In the spirit of constructive engagement and in furtherance of our commitment to fostering good governance, we recommend that the administration intensify efforts in continuous training and retraining of healthcare personnel to match infrastructural development with world-class service delivery.”

They also urged the government to “strengthen partnerships with private sector stakeholders, donor organizations, and international development agencies to ensure long-term financial sustainability, rapid technological advancements, and consistent quality improvement.”

On the digital front, the coalition called attention to foundational needs for the e-HMS to function optimally. “As the state advances the digitization of healthcare services, we urge that particular attention be paid to cybersecurity, stable electricity supply, and internet connectivity, especially in rural health centers,” it advised.

Concluding the statement, the CRPP reaffirmed its commitment to objective governance evaluation, saying, “Governor Mbah’s performance thus far reflects a clear understanding of the interconnection between a healthy population and sustainable economic growth.

“As our sectoral assessment continues, we remain dedicated to providing objective reviews that celebrate achievements, encourage constructive feedback, and promote the collective goal of building a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Enugu State.”
