In a rare and symbolic gesture of solidarity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, paid an unannounced visit to Nigerian troops engaged in counterterrorism operations under Operation Fansan Yamma in Katsina State on Friday.

The visit, conducted without the usual high-ranking military entourage, allowed the President to personally assess the security situation and engage directly with soldiers at the frontline. It marks one of the few times in Nigeria’s recent history that a sitting president has visited active combat zones in such a hands-on manner.

Addressing the troops, President Tinubu lauded their courage, sacrifice, and steadfastness in the fight against terrorism, describing their mission as critical not just for national security but for the very identity of the country.

“The fight you are waging here in Katsina and across the country is not just a battle for territory; it is a battle for the soul of Nigeria,” Tinubu declared. “Nigeria depends on you, and I am with you today, tomorrow, and always. Stay strong. Stay focused.”

He expressed deep admiration for the troops’ dedication despite the dangers they face daily. “I stand before you today not just as your President and Commander-in-Chief, but as a fellow patriot, deeply humbled by your courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the peace, security, and sovereignty of our great nation,” he said.

Acknowledging the personal and collective sacrifices made by the military, Tinubu praised their role as protectors of democracy and freedom. “You are the shield of Nigeria, the brave sons and daughters who stand between our people and the forces of terror,” he noted. “Every inch of ground you hold, every terrorist you neutralize, and every community you secure is a victory for justice, freedom, and the future of our children.”

The President assured the soldiers of the Federal Government’s full support, outlining measures being taken to enhance their operational capacity and welfare. These include improved access to advanced technology, better intelligence resources, enhanced logistics, and comprehensive welfare packages covering housing, healthcare, insurance, and timely payment of allowances.

“As your Commander-in-Chief, I am fully aware of the challenges you face,” Tinubu said. “We are taking bold steps to equip you with advanced technology, superior intelligence, and robust logistical support to not only defend this nation but to dominate and defeat every adversary.”

He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of military families and strengthening support systems for those left at home.

Concluding his address, President Tinubu issued a powerful message to adversaries threatening Nigeria’s stability: “This war will not be won by weapons alone but by your will to stand, resist, fight, and triumph. To those who seek to destabilize our nation—be they domestic collaborators or foreign agents—hear this: Nigeria will not bow. Not to fear. Not to terror. Not to treachery.”

The President’s visit has been widely seen as a morale booster for the troops and a strong signal of his administration’s prioritization of security amid persistent threats from insurgent groups in the region.

Military analysts and civil society observers have praised the move as a demonstration of leadership by example, while calling for sustained political and logistical support for security forces.

As Nigeria continues its battle against terrorism and banditry, President Tinubu’s frontline engagement underscores his administration’s message: the fight for peace and stability remains an urgent, collective national mission.
