The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) commends the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) for recommending a review of the revenue allocation formula. This initiative aligns with the constitutional provision for periodic reviews every five years, which has been neglected for over 16 years.
The review is vital to ensure local governments can effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities as outlined in the Fourth Schedule to the 1999 Constitution, which includes responsibilities for economic and social development, provision of basic services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
ALGON believes this review will address economic challenges and ensure equitable resource distribution. The ALGON National President, Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal, expressed appreciation for RMAFC’s proactive approach, stating that the review will help address gaps and setbacks in the economy especially at the grassroots level.
Earlier, the ALGON’s Ag. Director General, Barr. Mrs. Evan Enekwe, also commended RMAFC’s efforts, recalling the recent high-level delegation led by her to the commission. She noted that the review aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s objectives and urged for a comprehensive and inclusive review.
ALGON demands the review prioritize local government needs, promoting fiscal sustainability and economic development and look forward to collaborating with RMAFC for a successful review.
