Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, returned to Port Harcourt on Friday evening after spending two weeks overseas, amid ongoing political tensions in the oil-rich state.

Fubara arrived at the international wing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, around 7:00 PM local time. A video circulating online showed the embattled governor being received by close aides before departing swiftly in a waiting SUV.

Governor Fubara’s return comes weeks after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025. The President’s directive led to the suspension of Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.Fubara Returns To Port Harcourt After Two-Week Vacation Overseas

President Tinubu justified the extraordinary measures by citing attacks on critical oil infrastructure by militant groups and escalating political tensions between Governor Fubara and 27 state lawmakers.

The conflict reportedly involved political rivalries linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State.

In the wake of the suspension, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as Interim Administrator of Rivers State to oversee governance during the emergency period.

Fubara has yet to make any public statement since his return, but his presence in Port Harcourt is already fueling speculation about possible political moves or legal challenges to his suspension. Political observers suggest that Fubara’s return could further complicate the already volatile situation in Rivers State.

As Rivers State remains under federal control, stakeholders are watching closely to see whether Fubara intends to contest his suspension or mobilize supporters amid the ongoing governance crisis.
