In a decisive move to restore credibility and discipline within its ranks, the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) has announced the suspension of former acting National Chairman Barrister Julius Abure and former National Secretary Mr. Umar Farouk.
This action follows the submission of an investigative report led by Senator Ireti Kingibe and Highchief Peter Ameh, which detailed serious allegations of financial misconduct, anti-party activities, and behavior deemed damaging to the party’s reputation.
According to a press release signed by the Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Ester Nenadi, and Acting National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the investigation uncovered extensive evidence of fraudulent financial transactions.
Abure and Farouk were both implicated in unauthorized withdrawals and transfers from party accounts, casting a shadow over their leadership.
The NEC has ratified the recommendations of the investigative committee, placing both men under an initial six-month suspension.
During this time, Abure is prohibited from presenting himself as the National Chairman, while Farouk’s involvement remains under further review.
The press release further makes clear that all members of Abure’s National Working Committee have been directed to immediately cease representing themselves as part of the party’s leadership.
The NEC has warned that any failure to comply with these disciplinary measures will result in even more severe consequences.
In reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, the Labour Party’s leadership emphasized that these actions are part of a broader effort to uphold the integrity of the party and restore public confidence.
The caretaker committee called on party members and supporters to rally behind the reform process, assuring them that further updates will be provided as the investigations progress.
This development marks a critical moment for the Labour Party as it seeks to address internal challenges and reinforce its commitment to ethical leadership and good governance.
