In a strongly worded statement released over the weekend, Oluchi Oparah, the former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, has publicly refuted claims made by Mr. Faduri Joseph that he was a presidential aspirant under the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Oparah described Joseph’s assertions as false, misleading, and a calculated attempt to manipulate public perception for personal gain.
According to Oparah, Mr. Joseph has been making rounds in the media, alleging that he was unjustly sidelined in favor of Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, who eventually emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate. Joseph characterized the current internal crisis in the party as “poetic justice” for what he described as a betrayal by party leadership.
However, Oparah categorically dismissed these claims, asserting that at no point did Faduri Joseph fulfill the mandatory requirements to be recognized as a presidential aspirant of the party.
“To the best of my knowledge, as the National Treasurer of the Labour Party at the time, Mr. Joseph did not purchase the nomination form required to contest the party’s primaries,” she stated.
She challenged Mr. Joseph to present verifiable proof of any payment made into the party’s account for the nomination form, stressing that the process is transparent and well-documented. “In the absence of such evidence, I urge him to retract his claims and forever remain silent on this matter,” she said.
Oparah went further to condemn what she called the growing trend of political opportunism, specifically criticizing individuals who exploit the popularity and name of Mr. Peter Obi to resuscitate fading political ambitions. “Such actions not only undermine the integrity of our political process but also erode public trust in genuine leadership,” she warned.
The former treasurer also addressed the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, which has deepened following the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025, ruling that removed Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman. She called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently intervene and bring clarity and order to the party’s leadership and operational framework.
“In light of the uncertainty within the Labour Party, I call on INEC to step in and address the complexities surrounding the party’s leadership and operations. This intervention is critical to restoring order and ensuring transparency,” she emphasized.
Oparah concluded her statement by urging the media, party members, and the general public to disregard Mr. Joseph’s “baseless claims” and instead focus on rebuilding trust and integrity in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The Labour Party, which positioned itself as a major third force in the 2023 elections under the candidacy of Peter Obi, has in recent months faced internal disputes and leadership wrangling that threaten to derail its growing political influence.
With calls for regulatory oversight growing louder, all eyes now turn to INEC and party stakeholders as efforts to stabilize the Labour Party continue.
