Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, is actively participating in the 2025 United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial, a high-level global summit convened in Berlin from May 13 to 14. Themed “Future of Peacekeeping,” the ministerial brings together senior defence and foreign affairs leaders to shape the future direction of UN peacekeeping operations amid increasingly complex global security challenges.
The biennial event, regarded as a cornerstone of multilateral defence diplomacy, features prominent world figures including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres; Germany’s Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius; and Dr. Joham Wadephul, the German Minister for Foreign Affairs. Their presence reflects a collective commitment to reinforcing international peace and security through cooperative frameworks and innovative strategies.
Upon his arrival in Berlin, Minister Badaru was received by key German officials, including Gunther Krichbaum, State Minister for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office, and Dr. Nils Schmid, Parliamentary State Minister of Defence.
The warm reception set the tone for a series of productive engagements focused on Nigeria’s contributions to peacekeeping missions and deepening strategic ties with Germany.
A significant highlight of Minister Badaru’s participation was a bilateral meeting with Mr. Niels Annen, German State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The discussions focused on Nigeria’s economic potential, particularly in expanding defence cooperation and unlocking opportunities in the military-industrial complex. The dialogue emphasized the importance of aligning economic development with security goals in fostering long-term peace and stability.
In a separate engagement, Minister Badaru held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté, Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. The ministers discussed shared regional security concerns, strategies for enhancing regional stability in West Africa, and the role of value addition to natural resources in promoting sustainable national development.
Nigeria’s active participation in the 2025 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial underscores its enduring commitment to multilateral peacekeeping efforts and its strategic intent to play a leading role in promoting security and development both within the African continent and globally.
The Ministerial serves as a critical forum for aligning national commitments with global peacekeeping goals, fostering stronger partnerships, and integrating new technologies and capabilities into peace operations.
As Nigeria continues to contribute troops and expertise to UN missions, engagements such as this reaffirm its position as a key actor in the international security architecture.
