Controversial Nigerian-American investigative journalist and pharmacist, Dr. Kemi Olunloyo, has sparked a wave of online reactions following an explosive series of social media posts in which she publicly disavowed her connection to Nigeria and declared her permanent departure from the country’s affairs.
Dr. Olunloyo, daughter of the late former Oyo State Governor Victor Omololu Olunloyo, made the statements via her official social media account, reiterating that her life and allegiance are solely aligned with the United States.
“I’m Nigerian-American but I don’t identify with Nigerian content anymore,” she wrote. “You had me there for 11 years, destroyed my journalism career and I exited. I lost interest in anything Nigeria.”
On her vow on her 60th birthday, the journalist said she would never return to Nigeria, even in the wake of her father’s recent passing. She revealed that she will not attend his state funeral, stating that the funeral was postponed in anticipation of her return — a return she adamantly refuses to make.
“I’m actually not coming back to Nigeria for anything,” she added. “My children are Americans, my life is America… I funded my education with my pharmacy salary and got my RX scholarship.”
Known for her bold and often polarizing statements, Dr. Olunloyo also criticized what she described as “a fake life” portrayed by her parents to impress Nigerians, citing personal experiences of abandonment during significant moments of her life, including her graduations and hospitalization.
Her comments also included a harsh condemnation of systemic issues in Nigeria, from fraud and kidnappings to organ harvesting and corruption in education systems.
“Continue your fraud, lies, killings and same old kidnapping sprees and organ harvesting, JAMB fraud etc.,” she wrote. “I don’t care or give a [explicit] about anyone… I have moved on from stupidity.”
Also, in her response to a follower who speculated she was hiding in Kumasi, Ghana, Dr. Olunloyo clarified she had never visited the city, stating:
“Don’t confuse me with David Hundeyin. He’s the one hiding in Kumasi, Ghana, and I reported that 2021 when he fled Nigeria.”
Dr. Olunloyo, who claims she is now focused solely on YouTube, stated she has abandoned other social platforms and emphasized that her safety, whereabouts, and opinions are no longer up for public discussion.
Her comments have reignited debates about the treatment of journalists, diaspora identity, and the responsibilities of public figures in shaping national discourse. While some applaud her frankness and courage, others criticize her tone and sweeping generalizations.
Dr. Olunloyo has long been known for her unfiltered views, and this latest outburst continues a career characterized by defiance of conventional norms and a fierce stance on personal independence. Whether these declarations mark the end of her engagement with Nigerian affairs remains to be seen — but for now, she’s made her position unmistakably clear.
