The Office of the Deputy Governor of Kogi State has firmly denied allegations that Comrade Joel Salifu orchestrated an attack on opposition members during a Social Democratic Party (SDP) meeting in Ejule, describing the claims as “baseless” and “politically motivated.”

The statement, signed by Unubi Emmanuel, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, responded to accusations made yesterday by one Omera Opaluwa. According to Opaluwa, the Deputy Governor colluded with unnamed individuals to disrupt the opposition gathering violently.

In a swift rebuttal, the Deputy Governor’s office labeled the allegation as a desperate attempt by a “divided and disorganized” opposition to divert attention from internal crises.

“The SDP in Kogi is clearly imploding from within, with two rival factions continually clashing over control,” the statement read. “It is more likely that the violence was the result of an internal feud rather than any external interference.”

Out of state, Out of Blame

The press release also pointed out a crucial alibi, insisting that Deputy Governor Salifu has been on official duties outside the state since May 15 and is not expected to return until May 19. “How could he possibly have orchestrated an attack in Ejule while he’s out of the state on official assignment?” the statement queried.

Reaffirming his democratic credentials, the Deputy Governor’s office highlighted Salifu’s history of advocating for a vibrant opposition and constructive political dialogue. “It is contradictory to accuse a staunch believer in democratic competition of silencing opposition voices,” it stated.

In its conclusion, the statement urged the SDP to “eschew the politics of bitterness and falsehoods” and focus on internal unity and issue-based politics, rather than fanning the flames of public distrust.

This latest development adds fuel to the already volatile political climate in Kogi State as factions within the opposition struggle for relevance in the post-election landscape.
