The Obidient Movement, a political support coalition backing former presidential candidate Peter Obi, has categorically denied recent media reports claiming that Obi has accepted a running mate position to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in a proposed political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement signed by Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communication and Media for the Obidient Movement, the group expressed concern over what it described as “an imaginary publication” and stressed that there is no truth or factual basis to the report currently making the rounds in political circles and online platforms.
“The Obidient Movement has been inundated with calls from our members within and outside the country, including other members of the public, regarding a media publication claiming that our principal, Peter Obi, has been offered the running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the new coalition being formed ahead of 2027,” the statement read.
“Even as we know that the publication is imaginary to the author, we are tempted not to ignore it because of the possible far-reaching misconception it will have in the public space,” Kazaure added.
While acknowledging ongoing “frank and cordial engagements” with political stakeholders and prospective coalition partners, the Obidient Movement reiterated that Mr. Obi’s participation in any such coalition is guided by principled goals focused on national development and good governance, not political opportunism.
“Mr Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition is to provide a united front against and to tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out-of-school children, and the myriad of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria,” the statement said.
Emphasizing that Peter Obi remains a member of the Labour Party as of now, the Obidient Movement noted that any change in his political alignment will be communicated directly by Obi himself.
“We want politics that is progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria, and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power,” Kazaure stressed.
The Movement also used the opportunity to urge media outlets and the public to avoid sensationalism and speculative reporting, calling instead for constructive engagement in efforts to build a better Nigeria.
This clarification comes amid rising speculation about possible political realignments as various parties and influential figures begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. The relationship between Obi and Atiku, both of whom contested in the 2019 presidential elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has remained a subject of public interest, particularly since Obi’s switch to the Labour Party in 2022.
For now, the Obidient Movement maintains that Peter Obi’s political future is firmly rooted in principle-driven engagement focused on national progress and people-centered governance.
