In a significant step toward strengthening its position as a regional leader in digital identity and travel documentation, the Government of Kenya has announced a new partnership with Veridos, a global leader in integrated identity solutions.
This collaboration is set to deliver a new generation of electronic passports (ePassports) that combine advanced security innovations with a strong emphasis on national culture and identity.
Through this partnership, Kenya aims to enhance the functionality, security, and aesthetic value of its already advanced ePassports. The project reflects the government’s commitment to making travel easier and more secure for Kenyan citizens, both regionally and internationally. Central to the initiative is the integration of high-end technologies and design features that express Kenya’s unique heritage, fostering a sense of national pride and identity among passport holders.
A key aspect of the development involves the inclusion of color photographs for the first time on polycarbonate pages. This advancement will be part of a broader redesign that celebrates Kenya’s economy, history, heritage, and wildlife, ensuring that the new passports not only serve as secure travel documents but also as symbols of national representation.
The Kenyan government has emphasized the importance of creating a document that citizens can trust and feel proud to carry, highlighting the passport as an extension of national values and identity.
Security is at the forefront of the new ePassports, with Veridos introducing innovative features that significantly increase resistance to forgery and unauthorized duplication.
The new design incorporates high-resolution portrait technology, interactive visual elements that react to movement, and animated effects embedded within the pages, all of which contribute to an unprecedented level of document protection.
These enhancements are aimed at safeguarding the identity of Kenyan citizens while ensuring that the passport remains valid and reliable across international borders.
Evelyn Chegulet, Director General of the Directorate of Immigration Services in Kenya, affirmed that the vision behind the next generation of ePassports is to craft a document that captures the essence of the Kenyan people. She emphasized the government’s desire for a secure, inclusive, and world-class passport that reflects Kenya’s identity and can withstand the test of time. Chegulet praised Veridos as a partner whose expertise and values align closely with Kenya’s ambitions for the future of its national identity system.
Veridos, a joint venture between Germany’s Bundesdruckerei and Giesecke+Devrient, shares a core belief that every individual has a right to a secure and unique identity. This partnership with Kenya represents a pivotal moment for the company as it expands its impact in Africa.
Mohammad Mousa, Director of Business Development for the Middle East and Africa at Veridos, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to contribute lasting value to Kenyan citizens. He reiterated the company’s commitment to working hand in hand with the Kenyan government to develop a forward-looking identity strategy that aligns with the country’s values and vision of technological leadership.
The introduction of these next-generation ePassports marks a new chapter in Kenya’s digital transformation journey, signaling the government’s resolve to lead by example in secure identity innovation and inclusive representation on the global stage.
