Dr. (Mrs.) Rose Ohiama Ugbe has been nominated for the prestigious Academician of the Year. Award by the Yala Achievers Awards and Summits 2025 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to legal education. This highly respected award is known for its strong emphasis on integrity and excellence, with a long list of distinguished Nigerians counted among its past recipients.

Dr. Ugbe, an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Calabar, was selected following a rigorous and transparent vetting process, as the organisers maintain the highest standards in recognizing only those who exemplify genuine commitment and impact in their fields. Her nomination in the Excellence in Teaching category highlights her exceptional contributions to legal education and her enduring dedication to student development and academic excellence.

Over the years, Dr. Ugbe has consistently demonstrated a commitment to empowering her students, creating inclusive spaces that encourage intellectual expression and critical engagement.

The Board of Trustees of the Yala Achievers Awards commend her for her exemplary service and distinguished track record in academia, noting that the recognition aims to celebrate educators who show exceptional dedication to student learning and who continually raise the bar in pursuit of academic excellence.

Dr. (Mrs) Rose Ohiama Ugbe was born into the family of Late Pa Sylvanus Akpa Ebinyi and Late Madam Gladys Lifu Ogbo Agi, both of Olachor, Okpoma in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.

She obtained her Primary Education in the North and her Secondary Education up to the University level in Cross River State. She was a promising child from her childhood which made her to be distinguished amongst her peers. She was class monitor in her primary school days, Girls Senior Perfect in her Secondary School and Girls’ Prefect in the Higher School.

Her love and quest for knowledge led her to be admitted to Mary Knoll College Higher School, Okuku in the then Ogoja Local Government Area in 1983 to 1985 when she graduated as the best student. This feat led her to be admitted through Direct Entry to study Law in University of Calabar in 1986.

Dr Ugbe was consistent in her academic excellence that resulted in her graduating as the best female student in Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, 1990 set which earned her Late Justice Edem Koofreh’s Prize for the best graduating female student of the Faculty for that year.

At the Nigerian Law School, Lagos due to her excellent academic records, she was appointed Member of Council of the Nigerian Law School 1990/1991 set. She distinguished herself by graduating from Law School in flying colour in 1991.

After her National Youth Service in 1992, she was employed by Kanu Agabi and Associates, a Law Firm in Calabar, Cross River State in 1993. Desirous of impacting knowledge, she was employed in University of Calabar as a lecturer in 1995.

In her quest for more knowledge, she enrolled to pursue a Master’s Degree in Law at the University of Jos in 1999 and graduated with flying colours in 2003. She thereafter proceeded to obtain a Ph.D in Law, still at the University of Jos.

From the beginning of her Academic career as Assistant Lecturer at the University of Calabar, she grew up to the rank of Associate Prof of Law in 2016. Dr (Mrs) Rose Ohiama Ugbe has published over 50 articles on diverse areas of law in both local and international journals and has attended Conferences where she has presented papers. Her areas of interest are Intellectual Property Law, Environmental Law and Taxation.

She has held many positions in and outside the University. Such positions in the University include:

  • Dean, Faculty of Law at two different times: 2016 -2018 and 2023 to December 2024.
  • (First & Only Female Dean of the Faculty of Law University of Calabar till Date)
  • Sub-Dean of Law [2002-2010], for eight uninterrupted years an unbroken record till date.
  • Head of the Department of Private Law, Faculty of Law. 2015-2017
  • Deputy Director, Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC), University of Calabar 2015-2017.
  • Member of University of Calabar Senate 2015-2018, 2019-2020, 2023-2024.
  • Member, Committee of Deans, University of Calabar 2016-2018, 2023-2024.
  • Member, Appointments and Promotion Committee, University of Calabar 2016-2018 & 2023-2024.
  • Member, Council of Legal Education Committee of the Nigeria Law School, Abuja, 2016 -2018.
  • Member, Accreditation Team of Council of Legal Education to Madonna University in 2017.
  • Member, National Universities Commission Accreditation Team to Babcock University in 2021 amongst others.
    In the Church, she has held various positions and has received many awards some of which are: President, Vice President and Eti- Eka, Honoured Mother Awards respectively.

Award winners will be formally honoured at a luncheon and gala night on July 27, 2025 at Metropolitan Hotels, Calabar, by 6pm.
