Abuja, Nigeria – May 24, 2025
In a scathing statement issued on Saturday, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) condemned the recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ambition by key structures of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as “theatrical,” “desperate,” and a “Pyrrhic victory.”
The endorsement, announced during the APC National Summit held on Thursday, drew the backing of the party’s National Working Committee, the Progressive Governors Forum, and members of the National Assembly. However, the PRP contends that this display is a distraction from the more pressing realities of governance failure and public disillusionment.
“This move, driven by desperation rather than genuine democratic will, exposes the APC’s attempt to cling to power through orchestrated endorsements rather than the genuine voice of the Nigerian people,” the statement signed by PRP National Chairman, Mallam Falalu Bello, OFR, reads.
Citing historical precedents from across Africa, the PRP emphasized that political endorsements, no matter how elaborate, cannot replace the mandate of the people.
The party referenced Ivory Coast’s 2010 crisis, Zambia’s political turnaround under Hakainde Hichilema, and Gambia’s peaceful ousting of Yahya Jammeh, drawing parallels to Nigeria’s current political climate.
“Take Ivory Coast’s 2010 election, where Laurent Gbagbo, armed with fake endorsements like that of Tinubu, structure, and resources, sought to cling to power. Yet, he was ultimately rejected by the voters,” the statement noted. “The Ivorians’ refusal demonstrated that ‘hunger doesn’t forget,’ and no amount of political machinery and propaganda can replace the voice of a suffering populace.”
The party accused the APC of staging endorsements to mask widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians. It highlighted pressing national issues, including surging fuel prices, deteriorating infrastructure, rampant unemployment, insecurity, and economic stagnation, as signs of a leadership out of touch with the governed.
“Tinubu’s political machinery and endorsements may seem formidable, but they cannot silence the cries of the masses,” the PRP asserted. “When citizens whisper, ‘This is not what we voted for,’ it signals a fundamental disconnect between leadership and the governed.”
Labeling the APC’s strategy as a “classic case of a desperate power grab,” the PRP warned that such tactics have historically failed and would likely do so again unless there is a genuine reconnection with the people’s needs and aspirations.
“Power, even when fortified by the strongest structures, is vulnerable when the people no longer believe in its efficiency and legitimacy,” the PRP cautioned, adding that “endorsements become comedy, and power inevitably slips away” when public trust is lost.
The PRP ended its statement with a direct appeal to President Tinubu and the APC leadership to pivot from political showmanship to people-centered governance.
“Democracy is not just about endorsements or party machinery; it is about delivering tangible service, security, and dignity to the people,” the statement concluded. “Any attempt to undermine this fundamental principle through desperation is doomed to fail.”
