In response to a series of airspace violations and breaches of aviation protocols by foreign aircraft and helicopters, the Federal Government of Nigeria held a high-level inter-ministerial meeting on Tuesday to review national airspace security and regulatory enforcement mechanisms.

The meeting, chaired by the Honourable Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, took place at the Ministry of Defence’s Conference Hall at Ship House, Abuja. It brought together key stakeholders from the defence, aviation, and national security sectors to develop a coordinated approach to counter unauthorized incursions into Nigeria’s sovereign airspace.

Present at the meeting were the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN; the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, MON; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Gabriel Tanimu Aduda. Also in attendance were senior security personnel, military commanders, and aviation regulatory experts.

The discussions focused on enhancing Nigeria’s aerial surveillance capabilities, tightening compliance checks for foreign aircraft, and strengthening inter-agency collaboration for rapid response to airspace violations. The ministers emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s airspace in light of growing regional security threats and the need to assert national sovereignty.

Minister Badaru underscored the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorized flights and committed to taking firm diplomatic and regulatory actions against violators. He stressed that Nigeria would continue to work with international partners while ensuring full compliance with its aviation laws.

In his remarks, Minister Keyamo highlighted the urgent need to modernize radar systems and enforce stricter oversight of flight paths, landing permissions, and aircraft registration processes.

The government is expected to announce new airspace security protocols and oversight measures in the coming weeks as part of a broader strategy to deter future breaches and reinforce the integrity of Nigeria’s skies.
