In a powerful expression of gratitude and reaffirmation of commitment to democratic ideals, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, state governors, the judiciary, civil society, the media, and the Nigerian people for their unwavering support and contributions to the advancement of local governance in the country.

In an official statement issued by Hon. Hanani Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of ALGON and Chairman of the Plateau State Chapter, the Association paid glowing tribute to President Tinubu, praising his “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening local governance in Nigeria.” Mohammed emphasized that the administration’s strategic efforts to empower Local Government Areas (LGAs) were pivotal in enabling them to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.

“Our heartfelt gratitude and salute go to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement declared, crediting the president for laying the groundwork for a stronger and more functional local government system across the country.

The statement further acknowledged the collaborative role of the 36 state governors and the Federal Capital Territory through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).

Hon. Mohammed praised the governors for their “collaborative spirit and dedication to grassroots development,” describing their leadership as “a beacon of hope for a brighter future.” The affirmation of partnership between the state governments and local councils was heralded as a significant step toward a more inclusive and effective democratic system.

ALGON also extended its appreciation to the Nigerian judiciary for its role in upholding the rights and autonomy of local governments, reinforcing constitutional democracy and setting legal precedents that empower LGAs in the execution of their mandates.

Special recognition was also given to the mass media for its role in promoting transparency and accountability within local government administration. “We appreciate the Mass Media for promoting transparency and accountability in local governance,” Mohammed noted, underscoring the importance of a free and active press in democratic consolidation.

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) were equally commended for their “tireless efforts in promoting good governance, accountability, and transparency at the grassroots level.” ALGON acknowledged the role of these groups in advocating for reforms, monitoring service delivery, and ensuring that governance reaches the common man.

The Association did not overlook the historical sacrifices made in the pursuit of democratic ideals. “We honour the memories of those who have paid the ultimate price in the struggle for constitutional democracy and a virile local government system,” the statement read solemnly, paying homage to patriots who championed the cause of local autonomy and citizen-centric governance.

In a heartfelt tribute to ordinary Nigerians, ALGON expressed gratitude to the people for their “unwavering confidence in the system, despite challenges.” He emphasized that the support and trust of the citizens remain “the foundation upon which we build our efforts to deliver effective governance and improve the quality of life for our citizens.”

Reiterating ALGON’s mission and principles, the statement reaffirmed the association’s dedication to ensuring accountability, transparency, and the promotion of good governance at the grassroots level. “ALGON remains committed to promoting good governance, accountability, and transparency in local government administration,” it concluded. “We will continue to work with our partners to improve the lives of Nigerians at the grassroots level.”

The press statement reflects ALGON’s resolute stance on deepening democratic practices and enhancing local government efficacy across the federation.
