Farmers across parts of Enugu State are raising the alarm over a mysterious wave of insect attacks ravaging their crops, threatening this year’s harvest and livelihoods.
In exclusive interviews with LEADERSHIP, several farmers lamented that their farmlands and gardens have been under siege by unusual pests that have proven resistant to conventional insecticides.
Crops most affected include maize, okra, and tomatoes—staples for local consumption and market supply. The farmers expressed fears that the strange infestation may cripple food production in the area.
Obinna Ekwe, a distressed farmer, described the situation as alarming and unprecedented.
“It is a strange development,” he said. “These pests are so wicked that when they remember your farm or garden, they will not stop until the crops are ruined. I’ve tried everything—from insecticides to traditional remedies—but they seem immune. I honestly don’t know what else to do.”
Similarly, Mrs. Ifeoma Obigeri decried the stubborn nature of the pests and the extent of the damage already done.
“By this time last year, our crops were ready for harvest. Now, many have stunted growth or have been destroyed outright. These pests are causing real damage, and it’s no joke. Farmers are seriously worried.”
She commended LEADERSHIP for visiting the affected areas, noting that the severity of the situation could not be exaggerated.
“We’re glad you came to see it firsthand. This year’s harvest is at serious risk. The level of destruction is great.”
As fears grow over worsening food insecurity, the affected farmers are calling on the government and relevant agricultural authorities to urgently intervene and investigate the strange insect invasion before it devastates the farming season entirely.
