In a strategic move to reinforce party cohesion and grassroots engagement, stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi East convened on Saturday at the residence of the State Deputy Governor, His Excellency Comrade Joel Salifu, in Lokoja. The high-level meeting focused on uniting party ranks across the senatorial district and officially unveiled Hon. Ogwu Hassan Abdullahi as the new Acting Zonal Vice Chairman of the APC in Kogi East, following the demise of the former occupant of the position.
According to a statement by the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Unubi Emmanuel, the gathering drew a significant number of political figures and stakeholders from the region. In attendance were members of the National and State Assemblies, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Local Government Chairmen, Heads of Government Institutions, Divisional Party Chairmen, and other critical leaders within the party structure.
Deputy Governor Salifu emphasized the importance of party unity as a vehicle for regional development and political strength. He praised Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s inclusive leadership style, describing it as a catalyst for the current wave of peace and infrastructural development in the state.
“Governor Ododo’s style of governance is inclusive and result-driven. As stakeholders, we must appreciate and support this approach because it is key to deepening the party’s roots and expanding its reach. We are confident that Kogi East will give maximum support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election,” Salifu stated.
He also urged elected officials and appointees to remain connected to their grassroots, reminding them that politics is ultimately local. “Let us return home, identify with our people, and ensure that the APC remains a dominant force in our respective communities,” he said.
Among the key issues discussed was the proposed decamping ceremony, which will see high-profile politicians and supporters from opposition parties formally join the APC. To oversee the preparations, the Deputy Governor inaugurated a planning committee with a clear mandate to deliver a successful event, scheduled to take place in Anyigba.
Speaking on the expected return of former members to the party, Hon. Onuh Edoka, Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, expressed optimism. “Many who left are now ready to return. Our arms are open to welcome them back,” he said, specifically referencing sentiments from the Ankpa Federal Constituency.
Similarly, Alhaji Alhasan Salisu Adakeke, Secretary of SUBEB and representative of Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, credited Governor Ododo’s good governance for the increasing number of political converts. “People are gravitating towards the APC because of the Governor’s performance,” he noted.
Hon. David Idris Zacharias, who represents Idah Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stressed the importance of internal harmony, calling on leaders to resolve lingering disputes to consolidate the party’s strength.
State Auditor General Hon. Yakubu Okala lauded both the Governor and Deputy Governor for their leadership and commitment to upholding the APC’s values. He called on stakeholders to align themselves with the administration’s agenda and remain proactive in driving the party’s national priorities.
The meeting reached a climax with a resounding endorsement for the reelection of Governor Ododo and Deputy Governor Salifu in 2027. The motion, moved by Rt. Hon. Comfort Nwuchiola Egwaba, Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, and seconded by Hon. Lawal Akus, Member representing Ankpa I Constituency, was unanimously adopted by the stakeholders.
Saturday’s meeting is seen as a significant step in consolidating the APC’s political machinery in Kogi East, as the party prepares for both internal consolidation and broader electoral challenges ahead of 2027.
