The Association of Female Comrades (AFC) has lauded the Nigerian judiciary for delivering justice in the high-profile murder case of Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member whose brutal killing shocked the nation.
The High Court sitting in Nasarawa State, presided over by Justice Simon Aboki, on Tuesday sentenced Oluwatimilehin Ajayi to death by hanging after finding him guilty of the gruesome murder. The court’s judgment marked the end of a prolonged legal battle and was widely welcomed by advocates against gender-based violence.
In a statement issued shortly after the verdict, the President of the AFC, Comrade Muniretu Isah, praised the judiciary for demonstrating courage and impartiality in delivering justice.
“We commend Justice Simon Aboki for his impartiality and commitment to truth in this matter,” Isah said. “His judgment reinforces the message that no one is above the law and that our courts can serve as a refuge where the cries of victims are not silenced or ignored.”
The AFC described the ruling as a landmark victory in the fight against femicide and violence against women in Nigeria.
The organization noted that beyond serving justice for Salome Adaidu and her grieving family, the judgment sends a strong national message that violence against women will not go unpunished.
“This is more than just a court ruling. It’s a statement that brutality against women will not be tolerated in Nigeria,” the AFC stated. “It reflects the kind of responsive and fearless justice system we have long advocated for—a system where women feel safe, protected, and empowered.”
The Association further called on the Nigerian judiciary to sustain the momentum by ensuring swift and fair justice in all cases, especially those involving violence against women and vulnerable populations.
“Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. Today, justice was truly seen,” the statement concluded.
The case had drawn national attention since the tragic death of Salome Adaidu, with widespread calls for justice from human rights groups, women’s organizations, and the NYSC community.
The AFC pledged to continue partnering with relevant stakeholders to ensure the protection of women’s rights across the country.
