The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) today marked a historic milestone with the commissioning of its National Office in Abuja, the unveiling of the prototype for the proposed AGN Nollywood Centre, and the launch of the AGN Super App. The event, still ongoing at the nation’s capital, attracted leading stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative industry, government representatives, and prominent Nollywood stars.
Welcoming guests to the occasion, the President of the Guild, Dr. Emeka Rollas (MON), expressed gratitude and pride in the AGN’s journey towards institutional growth and infrastructure development, describing the day as “a joyful occasion and a great sense of accomplishment.”
“This commissioning of the AGN National Office is the first in the last 12 years,” Dr. Rollas noted. “We are also unveiling the prototype of the AGN Nollywood Centre, a five-story Galleria project to be located in the Katampe area of Abuja. The centre will feature two cinemas, office spaces, restaurants, and a hybrid event space upstairs for hosting various industry activities.”
He said the initiatives are part of the Guild’s strategic drive to reposition itself as a leading force within Africa’s cultural and creative sectors.
“As the umbrella body for all screen actors in Nigeria, with over one million members across 34 states and the FCT, AGN remains the largest association in the cultural sector in Africa,” Rollas highlighted. “We are determined to take our rightful place at the forefront of the industry’s evolution.”
In addition to unveiling the physical infrastructure, the AGN also launched its cutting-edge digital platform — the AGN Super App — which aims to enhance member engagement, streamline internal processes, and serve as a payment and welfare platform for actors.
“The AGN Super App is not just a social interactive tool for members,” Rollas explained. “It is also designed as a payment platform to ensure better welfare management and communication within the Guild.”
Highlighting the Guild’s international engagements in recent years, Dr. Rollas referenced the successful AGN International Festival, which debuted in Miami, USA, in 2023 and had its second edition in Los Angeles last year.
“We’re planning for the third edition later this year, either in Los Angeles or Atlanta,” he announced. “In addition, our AGN Roundtable Initiative in the UK has created further visibility for Nigerian actors on the global stage.”
The AGN President also used the occasion to appeal to government stakeholders for targeted interventions to support actors, especially in the areas of capacity building and welfare.
“I must sincerely appreciate the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy for its ongoing interventions for the creative industry over the past two years,” Rollas acknowledged. “However, I humbly urge the Minister, Ms. Hannatu Musa Musawa, to consider a special intervention programme dedicated to actors, who remain the faces and voices of Nollywood.”
He also called on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister for a partnership focused on youth empowerment through acting, stressing that such initiatives could help curb youth restiveness.
“There is no doubt that empowerment is one of the best ways to address youth restlessness, and Nollywood plays a very significant role in this regard,” he said. “Filmmaking employs hundreds of talents and contributes meaningfully to tourism and economic growth within the nation’s capital.”
Dr. Rollas concluded his speech with a renewed commitment to promoting the core values of a new Nigeria.
“As cultural ambassadors and influencers, we restate our support for the continuous promotion of unity, peace, democracy, hard work, honesty, and enterprise,” he declared. “Thank you all for honoring us with your presence on this historic day.”
The unveiling of the AGN Nollywood Centre prototype was met with resounding applause from attendees, who described the project as a game-changer for Nollywood’s infrastructural development.
As the event continues, industry stakeholders, partners, and members, including Senator Ned Nwoko, the husband of the Nollywood diva, Regina Daniels, former AGN President, Segun Arinze, Legal icon and human rights lawyer, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, and a host of other, are expected to engage in fundraising efforts to support the realization of the AGN Nollywood Centre project.
