The All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) has hailed the Dangote Refinery for what it calls a “bold and visionary” investment in Nigeria’s energy and transport sectors, following the company’s $467 million deployment of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks.

In a statement signed by its President, H.E. Osisiogu Osikenyi E., the continent-wide student body described the initiative as a strategic leap in Africa’s energy transition, noting that it would reduce fuel transportation costs by a staggering $1.1 billion annually. AASU highlighted the expected impact of delivering fuel directly to petrol stations and industrial hubs—cutting out middlemen, lowering pump prices, and fortifying supply chain efficiency.

The union, which represents millions of students across Africa, also praised the initiative’s targeted support for Nigeria’s more than 42 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), many of which have been buckling under unsustainable energy costs.

This initiative promises not just economic relief, but also fresh momentum for innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth,” the statement noted, adding that it underscores the critical role of private sector leadership in driving sustainable development across the continent.

Beyond its economic implications, the project is also expected to generate over 15,000 jobs, a prospect AASU says will significantly contribute to youth employment and skills development.

This is a milestone in reshaping Nigeria’s energy and logistics landscape in a sustainable and forward-looking manner,” Osisiogu added.

AASU called on other African stakeholders to draw inspiration from the Dangote Group’s investment model, emphasizing the importance of clean energy solutions, industrial expansion, and job creation as the cornerstones of Africa’s economic renaissance.

The union concluded by reaffirming its confidence in the transformative potential of homegrown enterprises like Dangote Refinery to advance the vision of economic self-reliance across the continent.
