The National Alliance for Democratic Governance (NADG) has strongly criticised the recent decision by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) to reinstate Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, warning that the move represents “the beginning of the end” for Nigeria’s main opposition party.
In a statement signed by its President and National Coordinator, Comrade James Ezema, and released in Abuja on Wednesday, NADG condemned the decision of the PDP’s 100th NEC meeting, stating it signified the party’s complete surrender to internal sabotage and external political influence.
“Contrary to the belief that the reinstatement of Senator Sam Anyanwu would bring peace and rejuvenation to the PDP, this move has instead cemented the party’s self-destruction,” the group said. “The PDP has effectively handed over its structure to anti-party elements, many of whom openly worked against the party in 2023 and now serve the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).”
NADG singled out the role of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alleging he has continued to exert control over PDP’s affairs despite being a prominent figure in the APC-led administration.
“These persons will now take charge of committees and structures leading to the PDP’s national convention—if it ever holds—and eventually engineer the emergence of a weak presidential candidate incapable of mounting a serious challenge to the APC in 2027,” the statement warned.
The group used biblical imagery to illustrate its position, declaring that “it is Nunc Dimittis for the PDP, a party that mistreats a faithful wife to please a wayward concubine,” likening the PDP’s decision-making to a suicidal submission to its own political undertakers.
Recalling past internal fractures, NADG asserted that the party’s downward spiral began before the 2023 general elections, citing the exit of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi to the Labour Party and Ebonyi Governor Dave Umahi’s defection to the APC. Both moves, the group said, were direct consequences of PDP’s failure to uphold zoning principles and address calls for equity.
“The PDP’s failure to correct the injustice of 2023 less than two years to the 2027 election is the principal reason it continues to implode,” the statement added.
With its latest decisions, the NADG concluded, the PDP has not only lost its ideological footing but has actively empowered forces that seek to ensure its extinction from Nigeria’s political future.
