Delta Students Crowned World Debate Champions in Qatar, Earn Governor Oborevwori’s Praise

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has extended heartfelt congratulations to a team of exceptional students from Delta State who represented Nigeria and emerged victorious at the World Schools Debate Championship recently held in Doha, Qatar.

The Nigerian delegation, composed entirely of students from various secondary schools in Delta, outshone formidable opponents from the State of Chicago, USA, and the host nation, Qatar, to claim the global title. The team clinched a 2–1 win in the opening round before delivering a flawless 3–0 victory in the finals, sealing the championship with a commanding 5–1 aggregate.

The triumphant students included Wisdom Chukwuma of Government College, Ughelli; Otorvo Uyoyou of Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun; Abraham Honour of Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka; Ikhamateh Splendour of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba; and Alika Daniel of Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori lauded the students for their stellar performance, describing the victory as a reflection of Delta State’s growing reputation as a center for academic and intellectual distinction.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Delta State, I heartily congratulate our brilliant students who have made Nigeria and Delta proud by emerging world champions at the World Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar,” the Governor said.

He offered special recognition to Miss Ikhamateh Splendour, who was named the Overall Best Debater of the tournament, hailing her individual feat as “unprecedented and a shining testament to the ‘Delta Can-Do Spirit’.”

Governor Oborevwori praised the team’s discipline, eloquence, and intelligence, emphasizing that their success reflects the fruits of sustained investment in education under his administration’s MORE Agenda.

He urged young Nigerians to emulate the champions’ dedication and strive for excellence in all their endeavors.

The team’s remarkable achievement has sparked jubilations across Delta State and beyond, reaffirming the state’s unwavering commitment to nurturing talents capable of achieving global acclaim.
