The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Delta State Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, has dismissed as “ill-informed and misleading” recent criticisms of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s infrastructural projects by Chief Wilson Omene, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council.
Chief Omene, in an interview aired on Rero TV, had questioned the economic relevance of the ongoing construction of flyovers in Warri and Effurun, describing them as disconnected from productive sectors. He also condemned Governor Oborevwori’s decision to defect to the APC.
Responding in a strongly worded statement on Saturday, Ahon defended the administration’s infrastructure drive, insisting that the flyovers and associated projects were strategic efforts to address the long-standing traffic congestion in Warri and Effurun—two of Delta’s key economic centres.
“The flyovers, road expansions, and the sleepway interchange are not cosmetic. They are long-term investments in urban mobility, ease of doing business, and overall economic growth,” Ahon stated.
He emphasized that Warri and Effurun serve as critical gateways connecting ports, industries, and the hinterland, and that the infrastructural renewal underway in the area is aimed at unlocking commercial potential and encouraging private sector investment.
“Perhaps, Chief Wilson Omene may have to check the meaning of enabling business environment,” Ahon quipped, adding that only those out of touch with modern urban planning would fail to appreciate the relevance of such capital projects.
Reacting to Omene’s argument that the funds could have been used to establish industries in Delta Central Senatorial District, Ahon described the comment as narrow-minded and parochial, asserting that Governor Oborevwori is committed to governing the entire state equitably.
“Delta State is bigger than any single senatorial district. The Governor’s M.O.R.E agenda—Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security—is being implemented equitably across Delta North, Delta Central, and Delta South. No part of the state has been left behind,” he said.
On the Governor’s recent move to the APC, Ahon explained that it was a product of widespread consultations with political stakeholders, community leaders, and interest groups across Delta State.
According to him, the realignment was driven by a strategic intent to attract greater federal support and deliver enhanced democratic dividends to the people of the state.
“Governor Oborevwori’s alignment with the APC was not for personal benefit but to synergize with the Federal Government in delivering more dividends of democracy to Deltans and residents.
“Chief Wilson Omene is only acting a script of those who saw the Governor’s decision as a threat to their personal political interests,” he said.
Ahon urged Omene and other critics to channel their efforts toward constructive and fact-based engagements rather than divisive and politically motivated commentaries.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to inclusive development, infrastructure transformation, and lasting legacies for future generations.
“Constructive criticism is welcome, but it must be rooted in facts and guided by a sincere desire to move Delta State forward,” the CPS concluded.
