…As Babachir Lawal Claims APC Insiders Backing Opposition Coalition
As political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a stern warning to critics and opposition forces not to underestimate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a visionary leader with the capacity to transform Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2025 National Cybersecurity Conference held in Abuja, Ribadu dismissed the wave of criticism targeting the Tinubu administration as outdated rhetoric from “expired” political figures who failed in their time and are struggling to remain relevant in a rapidly changing political landscape.
“Forget what some people are saying, Nigeria is safer and better every single day,” Ribadu declared. “Nigerians are now more discerning and can no longer be swayed by propaganda and failed narratives.”
The NSA praised President Tinubu’s digital-driven governance style and proactive reforms, attributing Nigeria’s improving security outlook and investment climate to the administration’s policies and strategic partnerships.
“Today, the Niger Delta is safer than ever before. The South-East is returning to normalcy. We have deployed proactive strategies in collaboration with security agencies and tech partners. Those instigating unrest from abroad will be tracked and prosecuted — we will not allow external forces to derail our national progress,” Ribadu said.
He described Tinubu as a “digital, enlightened and visionary leader” who has shown determination to stabilise the country and chart a bold course toward economic recovery and national rebirth.
But in a parallel development, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, took a different stance, claiming that several top members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) — including serving governors — are quietly backing an emerging opposition coalition ahead of 2027.
Lawal, who officially resigned from the APC on June 29, revealed that discontent is growing within the ruling party and many members, though yet to speak out publicly, have aligned with efforts to unseat Tinubu in the next presidential election.
“Yes, there are APC members working with the coalition, and they will speak for themselves,” Lawal said. “Some might not be bold enough to do it the way I have, but there are very many. Some governors have told me they are on board.”
The former SGF accused the APC of stifling internal dissent and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, adding that many once-loyal supporters of the President have grown disillusioned and are seeking a better alternative.
While Ribadu’s comments project a government determined to stay the course and secure its mandate, Lawal’s revelations point to simmering cracks within the ruling party as opposition momentum gathers in the background.
With both camps firm in their positions, Nigeria’s political temperature is expected to rise further as the countdown to 2027 begins in earnest.
