As the National Constitutional Summit continues its critical deliberations, the Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide has delivered a fervent goodwill message, strongly advocating for a fundamental restructuring of Nigeria’s governance system through a new, people-driven constitution.

Evang. Amb. Dr. Raphael C.D. NwaDavid, President-General of the Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide, conveyed his organization’s deep appreciation for the summit, describing it as “timely and necessary” given the nation’s persistent challenges stemming from an “outdated and unfair constitutional structure.”

Dr. NwaDavid reiterated a widespread sentiment at the summit, asserting that the 1999 Constitution, a product of military transition, has outlived its “temporary purpose” and does not reflect the will of the Nigerian people. He stressed the urgent need to replace it with a “new People’s Constitution that is fair, inclusive, and built on the agreement of all Nigerians.”

A cornerstone of Umuigbo United Assembly’s message is the call for Nigeria to revert to a regional system of government. Under this proposed structure, each region would possess significant autonomy, managing its own affairs and developing at its own pace.

Dr. NwaDavid emphasized that if the current presidential system’s state structure is maintained, then it is imperative that all regions have an equal number of states to address existing imbalances, specifically citing the South East’s current five states as “unfair and unjust.”

Furthermore, the organization strongly advocates for regional control over resources and economy, with each region contributing a “fair share of revenue to the central government for national services.” This, according to Dr. NwaDavid, would foster fairness, stimulate development, and reduce the current “over-dependence on the centre.”

On the crucial issue of security, the Umuigbo United Assembly expressed strong support for the creation of regional and state police forces. Dr. NwaDavid argued that the centralized police system has “failed to protect lives and property effectively” and that local policing would significantly improve security, build trust, and address crime more efficiently.

Finally, the goodwill message underscored the vital importance of youth inclusion in leadership within any new constitutional framework. Dr. NwaDavid highlighted the “ideas, energy, and passion” of Nigeria’s young people, stressing the necessity of creating space for them in politics, public service, and decision-making for a more promising future.

Evang. Amb. Dr. Raphael C.D. NwaDavid concluded his message by expressing hope that the emergency National Constitutional Summit would mark “the beginning of a new Nigeria – one built on justice, equality, and unity.”
