The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Nutrition 774 Initiative, a flagship program under the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Recognizing the critical role local governments play in addressing malnutrition and improving nutritional outcomes, ALGON is poised to drive impactful interventions at the grassroots level.

At a recent National Summit on Nutrition and Food Security as part of the events to mark the two years anniversary of the present National Assembly, ALGON National President Hon. Bello Lawal, represented by Dr. Ben Nkechika, ALGON Consultant on Health and Social Determinants of Health, outlined the association’s key roles in supporting the initiative. These include participating in the development of the N-774 Implementation Framework and Roadmap, implementing for nutrition-specific budget lines, maximizing sustainable local funding sources, multisectoral interventions and coordinating awareness sessions for State and Local Government Chairmen.

ALGON aims to enhance governance structures, improve nutrition knowledge and practices, and ultimately unlock Nigeria’s full human capital potential by working closely with the Federal Government, the State Governments, the Legislature, Development partners, critical stakeholders, and local communities. The initiative presents ambitious targets, including reducing undernourishment, stunting, and improving access to nutritious meals and improved healthcare.

With a focus on decentralized coordination, data-driven implementation, and community engagement, ALGON is well-positioned to make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of Nigerians.

By partnering with ALGON, the Nutrition 774 Initiative can leverage the association’s expertise and grassroots reach to drive its success and achieve its objectives.

Dr. Nkechika concluded by calling for intensified strategies and measures to secure farmlands and support local farmers, to guarantee maximum yield. The Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. Dr. Chike Okafor, thanked ALGON for its support and emphasized the need for sustained synergy with multi-sectoral institutions to address the nutrition gap.

The event was attended by notable stakeholders, including representatives from the Office of the Vice President, Speaker House of Representatives, Members of the National Assembly, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, and delegations from the Army, Navy, UNICEF, FAO, and other organizations.
