In a renewed push to deepen collaboration and improve electoral processes across the country, the newly inaugurated Executive Committee of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions (FOSIECON) on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters in Abuja.
Led by its National Chairman, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri, the FOSIECON delegation was warmly received by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and senior officials of the Commission.
The high-level meeting marks a significant effort to strengthen cooperation between the federal electoral body and State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs), with both parties reiterating their commitment to promoting credible elections and democratic governance at all levels.
In his remarks, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri emphasized FOSIECON’s determination to uphold electoral integrity, foster transparency, and build a stronger working relationship with INEC. He outlined key areas for collaboration, including technical support, capacity building through joint training initiatives, and knowledge exchange on electoral innovations and best practices.
“We believe that closer synergy with INEC is essential to improving the quality of elections conducted by SIECs across Nigeria,” Hon. Eri stated.
Responding, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu underscored the constitutional importance of SIECs and the critical role of local government elections in Nigeria’s democratic architecture.
“Credible local elections are the bedrock of national development. We welcome this engagement and look forward to exploring, in our closed-door discussions, concrete ways INEC can further support the SIECs in raising electoral standards,” Prof. Yakubu said.
The visit is expected to catalyze ongoing efforts to harmonize electoral practices and enhance the credibility of subnational elections across the federation.
