In a quiet but heartfelt ceremony marking his 76th birthday, former Inspector-General of Police, Sir (Dr.) Mike Mbama Okiro, was on Friday honoured with a Certificate of Appointment as Life Patron of the Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide, a global Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

The event, held at Sir Okiro’s residence in Abuja, drew some leaders of the organisation, led by the President-General, Evang. Amb. Raphael C.D. NwaDavid, who personally presented the certificate of recognition on behalf of the Assembly, supported by some members of the National Executive Council of the organisation.

In his speech during the presentation, Amb. NwaDavid hailed Sir Okiro’s distinguished service to Nigeria and unwavering contributions to the Igbo nation, stating:

“We, the Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide, are here to honour you for all the good works you are doing in this country Nigeria. During the period you served as the Inspector-General of Police, there was virtually no crime in Nigeria — the entire country was calm — in the East, West, North, and other parts of the country.”

He continued, “With your good record, the Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide is here today to plead with you to serve as our Life Patron. With you, we now have only two Life Patrons, and we are not looking for any other. Having you is enough for us.”

Visibly moved by the honour, Sir (Dr.) Okiro, who also holds the national honour of CFR, expressed surprise and deep appreciation for the recognition.

In his response, he said: “All that you enumerated that I did, I thought I was just doing my job. I never knew that my job would be a source of recognition; I was just doing my job professionally.”

The former Police boss advised leaders and citizens alike to always serve with integrity: “Do your best and posterity will judge you.

“On behalf of my family, friends, and associates, I thank you very much. What you did to me at the age of 76 will compel me to do more. Thank you very much.”

Giving the vote of thanks, Comrade James Ezema, National Media and Publicity Secretary of the Umuigbo United Assembly, commended the former IGP for the warm and honourable reception, noting that:

“With your support, Sir, the Umuigbo United Assembly will now stand firm with assurance that we are not alone as your endorsement today strengthens our voice and cause.”

The appointment of Sir Okiro as a Life Patron comes as a reaffirmation of his legacy as a disciplined public servant, Igbo patriot, and national icon, whose life of service continues to inspire younger generations.

The delegation of the Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide at the presentation included the group’s National Contact and Mobilisation, Chief Marcel Ezenwa and Annabel Ujunwa, National Admin Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide.
