The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly condemned the arrest of human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, by the Nigerian Police, describing it as “a shameful act of oppression” and “a blatant abuse of power.”

In a press release signed by its National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, the CUPP decried what it called a disturbing trend of using law enforcement agencies to stifle dissent and suppress fundamental freedoms, warning that such actions threaten the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy.

“We strongly condemn the arrest of Omoyele Sowore by the Nigerian Police, an act that flouts Section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the fundamental right to freedom of expression, including the freedom to hold opinions and share ideas without interference,” the statement read.

According to CUPP, Sowore’s arrest reflects a troubling misuse of police power, transforming the institution from a protector of citizens to an enforcer of political repression. “This arrest is not only unjust but also a disturbing misuse of police power, turning an institution meant to protect Nigerians into a tool for oppression and personal vendettas,” the coalition stated.

The CUPP further criticized the continued denial of bail to Sowore, labeling it “indefensible” and a clear violation of due process. The group demanded Sowore’s immediate and unconditional release and called on the Inspector General of Police to either charge him to court or release him without delay.

“Denying him his right to bail is indefensible and further exposes the misuse of authority to silence dissent. We demand his immediate and unconditional release,” the statement emphasized.

In an additional swipe at what it called growing institutional decay, the CUPP raised serious concerns over the meteoric rise of an unnamed officer to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police in just ten years, alleging favoritism and systemic corruption within the Nigerian Police Force.

“The alarming rise of an individual to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police in just 10 years raises serious questions about favoritism and systemic corruption. This demands a public inquiry to ensure transparency and fairness in the promotion process within the Nigerian Police Force,” the coalition urged.

The CUPP called on all Nigerians to resist the growing use of security forces to intimidate citizens and urged the Nigerian Police to return to its constitutional role of serving and protecting the people.

“Using the police to intimidate and oppress citizens must be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. Accountability is a collective responsibility, and we must stand against any actions that undermine the right to free expression. The Nigerian Police must cease being an instrument of oppression and uphold the rule of law,” the statement concluded.
