Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has decried what he described as the “ongoing injustice” against Nigerian youth activist, Rita Uguamaye, whose National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate has allegedly been withheld over her criticism of the Tinubu administration.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Sowore said the NYSC’s decision to seize Uguamaye’s certificate was a direct reprisal for her outspoken criticism of the federal government’s handling of the economy, which she made public during her service year.

Sowore, who was recently released from detention after being held in Abuja, linked his own arrest to efforts to stand with Uguamaye in securing her certificate.

“I was fully prepared to stand beside her to help her receive her NYSC discharge certificate. However, the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime unlawfully detained me in Abuja this past week; this regime thrives on intimidation, repression, and silencing the youth,” he said.

He stressed that Uguamaye’s activism had yielded tangible results for her colleagues in the service, noting that her bold stance pushed authorities to increase the NYSC monthly allowance to ₦77,000.

“This significant improvement was won through her sacrifice, and it is an injustice of the highest order that she continues to be denied what is rightfully hers upon completion of her service year,” Sowore stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to the case, the activist vowed not to relent until justice is achieved, both for Uguamaye and other Nigerians he said are being denied their rights under “an oppressive system.”

“We will not abandon her. Her fight is our fight. The struggle continues until we win,” he declared, signing off with his movement’s slogan, #RevolutionNow.
