The Delta State Police Command has scored a significant victory in its crackdown on armed robbery, recovering a stolen Mercedes Benz GLK, dangerous firearms, motorcycles, and an assortment of stolen valuables in a series of coordinated operations across the state.

Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, the operations led to the arrest of notorious robbery suspects and the neutralisation of criminal threats in Asaba and Ogwashi-Ukwu.

According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the first breakthrough came on August 5, at about 5:40 p.m., when operatives from B Division, Asaba, acting on credible intelligence, tracked down a suspected stolen Mercedes Benz GLK with registration number NZM10AP parked at a lot on Former Deputy Road, Asaba. The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Edewor Akponegware, led the Crime Branch team in a swift sting operation that resulted in the arrest of one Chinedu Eze, who was allegedly attempting to sell the SUV to an unsuspecting buyer.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been snatched at gunpoint in April 2023 in Abakpa, Enugu State, during which the rightful owner was shot. The car, first registered in 2023, had been fraudulently re-registered in 2025 before its recovery.

Barely a day earlier, on August 4, at about 4:30 a.m., police received a distress call reporting an ongoing armed robbery along Chelsea Street, Ogwashi-Ukwu. DPO CSP Okoyomon Israel immediately mobilised the Anti-Crime Squad alongside local vigilantes to the scene. The robbers attempted to escape but were intercepted, leading to the arrest of 22-year-old Thywill Selvin of Poly Road, Ogwashi-Ukwu, and 32-year-old Guntim Bako of Kwale Junction.

A cache of weapons and stolen items was recovered from the suspects, including a pump action rifle with live cartridges, a Beretta pistol with six rounds, three assault rifle rounds, two motorcycles, mobile phones, laptops, a tablet, a PS4 console, a home theatre set, music players, bags of clothes, and other looted property. Several victims have since identified their belongings.

Commending the swift and coordinated efforts of the operatives, CP Abaniwonda reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing aimed at flushing out criminal elements from Delta State. He urged residents to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities promptly, stressing that early information remains the most effective weapon in preventing crime.

SP Edafe emphasised that these operations underscore the Command’s determination to secure lives and property across the state, warning that criminals have no hiding place in Delta.
