Labour Party Accuses Julius Abure of Forum Shopping, Desperation Over Nasarawa Court Order

The Labour Party (LP) has strongly condemned what it describes as another “desperate and fraudulent” attempt by embattled former National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, to manipulate judicial processes, following reports of an alleged Nasarawa State High Court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to upload the names of candidates linked to his faction for the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council elections.
In a statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party expressed outrage over the development, describing the purported court order as both “suspicious and mischievous” in its timing, as it was made public on the eve of nationwide bye-elections.
The statement further noted that the order curiously referenced elections scheduled for February 2026, raising questions over its legitimacy.
The LP accused Abure of a well-documented pattern of misconduct, including “perjury, forgery, and criminal conspiracies,” recalling his alleged manipulation during the 2023 Ebonyi State governorship election and other instances “too numerous to mention.”
The party stressed that these matters remain under criminal investigation, citing a March 7, 2025 directive from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to the Inspector General of Police to prosecute Abure alongside associates Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Ojukwu Clement, and Edward Nkwegu Okereke.
Even if the reported order was valid, the LP argued, Abure’s decision to seek relief in a state high court on a matter involving INEC — a federal institution — amounted to “blatant forum shopping” and a “reckless abuse of judicial process,” as the Federal High Court holds exclusive jurisdiction over such issues. The party called for judicial reprimand against those engaging in such tactics.
The statement also underscored that the Supreme Court had, on April 4, 2025, delivered a landmark judgment removing Abure from office. Yet, according to the LP, he has continued to act in defiance of the ruling, allegedly enjoying tacit protection from the APC-led Federal Government.
“This unholy alliance serves only to undermine the Labour Party and erode Nigeria’s democratic institutions,” the statement read. “In their desperation for transient political advantage, they are willing to diminish the authority of the Supreme Court itself.”
The party reiterated its commitment to defending the integrity of the judiciary and the rule of law while calling on stakeholders and the public to remain vigilant against what it termed calculated attempts to destabilize the party from within.
