The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has issued a formal explanation regarding Tuesday’s derailment of a Kaduna-bound passenger train, assuring the public that the incident was contained without casualties and dismissing fears of sabotage.

In a statement released by the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation disclosed that the derailment occurred after one of the train’s coaches developed what is known as a hot axle—a mechanical fault caused by excessive friction and overheating in the wheel’s journal housing.

“The incident was not caused by sabotage or external interference,” Unyimadu emphasized. “It was a technical fault related to the wheel axle. The situation was quickly managed, and the train was marshalled safely to Rigasa Station in Kaduna.”

Disruption and Response

The fault, which occurred approximately 15 minutes after the train departed Kubwa Station in Abuja, forced an abrupt halt near Idah Village in Niger State. The delay sparked panic among passengers, particularly because the derailment happened in a security-sensitive zone.

NRC officials explained that while the train later continued its journey to Kaduna, seating capacity in the business-class section was affected. Passengers booked on the affected coach have since been contacted, and alternative arrangements have been provided.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and deeply appreciate their patience and understanding. Normal services have since resumed,” the statement read.

Safety Concerns Acknowledged

The NRC acknowledged growing concerns over the safety of the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, which has faced operational challenges since the March 28, 2022 terrorist attack that left several dead and many abducted.

While assuring travelers that there was no security breach during the derailment, the NRC pledged that a comprehensive investigation was already underway to ascertain the root cause of the mechanical fault and prevent future occurrences.

Commitment to Improvement

The corporation further outlined measures being considered, including intensified track and equipment inspections, investment in modern signaling and monitoring systems, and stricter safety protocols.

“The NRC remains committed to ensuring the safety, comfort, and reliability of all rail passengers. We are determined to strengthen our operations and maintain public confidence in the Abuja-Kaduna rail service,” Unyimadu said.

Background

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line has become one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes, offering an alternative to the Abuja–Kaduna expressway, which has been plagued by armed bandit attacks. However, incidents ranging from service disruptions to technical breakdowns have raised questions about the sustainability and safety of the service.

For now, the NRC is urging passengers scheduled to travel on the corridor to proceed with their plans as services have been restored, while reiterating its apology for the disruption.
